A team including friends and family of Mike
Ciaramitaro assembled together Saturday May 3rd in
honor of the 1997 GP North graduate who died tragically Feb.2,
2003. The team was one of three entries in the 13th
annual Marge’s Bar & Grill Hockey tournament put on by
proprietor Jimmy Depuys and Brian Piggott.
The first game of the tournament ended in a 3 to 1 loss for
Mike C’s Stars against the “Remax In The Pointes” team which
included Jimmy Depuys, Tony Zacaggni, Todd Beam, Rob Porter and
a host of other local talented players.
The very next game pitted Brian Piggott’s Red Squad against the
Remax Blues, the “Red Squad” would prove to be too much for the
Remax Blues to handle as Link Bessert would have a career game
scoring 4 goals and 2 assists in a 6-4 win. The very next game
of the tournament would match Mike C’s Stars against the very
big and strong “Red Squad” with players such as Danny “two and
out” Paolucci, Rick Gram, Rick Carlson, Brian Piggott, John Rajt,
Paul Mueller and a host of other talented players. A must win
for Mike C’s was necessary along with a goal differential of 3
goals in order to secure a spot in the championship game. The
game started with each team having great scoring chances only to
be shut down by stellar goaltending at each end of the ice. The
game remained scoreless until Mike C’s player Doug Wood scored
on a penalty shot awarded after he was hauled down on a
breakaway by Red team member Dan Paolucci. The 1-0 score would
start the team momentum rolling, as Dan Miller would score
assisted by Troy Bergman and Charles Thomas. Terry Shook would
tally later in the second period with assists to Spatafora and
Komasara. Doug Wood finished the scoring on an assist from Tony
and Brian Gatliff to move the lead to 4-0. The game ended
ensuring a trip to the championship game for Mike C’s against
the “Remax in the Pointes” team who had defeated the Stars
earlier by a 3-1 score.
The game would start out with each team trading shots and
great scoring chances throughout the first two periods, but the
game was deadlocked at 0-0. Pat McKee was playing superb in
goal for the Remax team and was not giving up any rebounds or
net to shoot at. Glen Burton was as stingy on the other end of
the ice for Mike C’s and shut down the ever-powerful trio of
Tony Zacaggni,Todd Beam and Jimmy Depuys. Until the 3rd
period when Doug Wood scored for Mike C’s the game had been
scoreless. With less than four minutes to play, and Mike C’s
team shorthanded due to a penalty, the Remax team would score to
tie the game and send the game to a shootout to decide the
tournament champion. Five shooters per side were selected to
break the dead lock and decide the 2003 championship. Mike C’s
entered Terry Shook, Dan Miller, Brian Gatliff, Matt Spatafora
and Doug Wood. The Remax team had Zacaggni, Porter, Beam, Dobbs
and Murray. Remax’s first three shooters were forced to shoot
wide as Glen Burton’s excellent goaltending prevailed. Mike C’s
had Shook and Wood score while Gatliff and Spatafora were
shutdown by Goalie Pat McKee. The game was on the line. The
fourth shooter for Remax had to score in order to keep any
possibility of winning alive. As the shooter approached, Stars
goalie Glen Burton stacked his pads and made a fantastic save
and preserved the win for Mike C’s Stars for the 2003 tournament
championship. Congratulations to all the players in the
tournament.
